David L. Rees guest column:

The arts are alive and well in the area

Many of you are aware that we have got some great things going on with the arts in the Marion and Grant County area. We should be proud, and we should support these events.

The Community School of the Arts is expanding the level of education in all areas - dance, voice, drama, instruments, etc. Opportunities for every age group are affordably offered.

Local dance studios, such as Playhouse, Dancer's Edge and Center Stage in Upland, touch the lives of youth with great excitement and opportunity.

Marion Civic Theatre offers many experiences with some great entertainment from the amateur actors of our community.

The Marion Philharmonic Orchestra gives us a taste of class in the concerts it presents, and it broadens our horizons.

The Black History Club at Marion High School makes an amazing impact on our lives if we let it.

The arts are important be-cause they broaden the city's opportunities to bring in new businesses. Business believes in the arts, and that can help our community grow again.

Arts education is a major focus of the Walton Center Arts Society. We had an unbelievable year last year, and we have exciting experiences to share for 2006.

As we look at the talent in our area, we decided to highlight as much of it as we can.

At 7:30 p.m. April 29, the New York Stage Originals, Tap Kids, comes to the F. Ritchie Walton Performing Arts Center. The show brings an exciting, invigorating show of dance.

The show features eight young tap-dancers, chosen from hundreds who auditioned from all across the country, and one of them, Kiliegh Williams, established her roots in Marion. Kiliegh still lives here with her family.

We also will have the opportunity to see our local dance studios featured before Tap Kids. Community School of the Arts-Tap Indiana, along with students from Dancer's Edge and tappers from Playhouse Dance Studio, will take the stage and show us what they can do.

After they open the show, Tap Kids will let it rip, and the show will close with all the dance schools performing a grand finale of almost 100 performers tap-dancing together.

Call the box office, 664-3739, for tickets; all the seats are reserved.

This show serves as a re-minder of all the great things that the Marion area is doing to promote the arts.

Thanks to all the great dance teachers and studios, enthusiastic parents and family members and great supporters of the arts, we can claim another professional in Kiliegh Williams and the Tap Kids.

Watch for more great shows at the Walton Performing Arts Center.

I think we can entertain you like you have never been entertained before.
